A long time ago, I read an article for class that talks about how students create a number different selves to adapt to each different environments; they will act differently around family, another way when around friends, and etc (they're not developing multiple personalities, don't worry).
I wonder how it may be true for churchgoers too. We talk about God and the Bible during our small group or youth groups, but what about outside those settings? Could we say that we are continuing to talk about the Bible outside the church? Whether we are with friends or not in a social setting, the question we must ask is what dominates our conversation all the time?
But more importantly, I want to rephrase the question to make it more "modern:" how many of you have at least one of the following: Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram? How many of us have a social network page where we can post photos and status updates? If you answered yes, then allow me to ask you: what are the last ten things on those social media sites that you have posted? How many of those involve the Gospel?
This is the challenge. The challenge is to win the souls of people not just on the streets, but also online. Technology has evolved to the point where any and everything has gone digital and instantly accessible. As this has become so, so did the Devil and his will.
His desire is that no one will be saved.
1 Peter 5:8
Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
You may be saying to yourself, but I try to invite people to church. I feel that if they try church just once, they'll come to know the Gospel. I want to let my pastor speak to them.
OR
I'm afraid of inviting people to my church. I'm afraid of sharing the Gospel.
IF this is you, consider this
95% have never led anyone to Jesus
80% have never shared their faith
2% are involved in evangelism
It is time to step away from the someone else aspect and carry the responsibility ourselves. Remember this.
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Matthew 28: 18-20
When you think evangelism, do you think: street evangelists, telling the people about Jesus in person? They are those things but it is not limited to that. That is like saying, people will only come outside but never online.
How many people do you see using iPhones to browse Facebook, how many people taking "selfies" and posting it on Instagram, how many people do you see watching Youtube? And if anything, what are they watching? More importantly, do you think more people would do the former three than go to church?
People won't come to church, but they will come to the Internet. This means that we must move away from limiting our images of evangelism to person-to-person interaction and sharing the Gospel on Facebook. People may not choose to be saved in church; rather, they may end up being saved while watching a preacher on Youtube.
Will your x amount of followers on Instagram have the chance to learn about the Jesus because you chose to tell the world about Jesus than about what you were having for lunch? Are you immortalizing the Lakers' scorching loss over the power of Jesus in your life?
For me, I am not sure but I highly doubt that people will remember in 10 days what I ate that I posted on Instagram.
This is why I choose to use the Internet for the Gospel. Too often we post things that don't matter. Too often we get sucked into the Internet instead of sharing the Gospel over the Internet. 2,405, 518, 376 people on minimum, since June 2013, have been using the Internet. That's 2 BILLION souls we can reach out to. 2 BILLION people that we can plant seeds to. 2 BILLION people that can be saved.
Will you join me in making the Internet a domain for Christ? Let the heart of salvation be shown on your Facebook profile.
